Let’s hope the politicians spend our money wisely
Tuesday 16th September 2008, 2:55PM BST.
From Angela Little.
Zoe Bisson’s letter (JEP, 9 September) highlights the efforts of two people and the Parents Action Group in achieving the funding of nursery places for three- and four-year-olds for all. However, having two young children myself and having seen the efforts of many people over the years, I feel that this letter is missing a couple of points.
People are assuming it is a done deal – it isn’t. The funding has only been approved by the Council of Ministers and everyone is waiting with bated breath for the States Members to debate and vote on this in the States Chamber on 16 September.
A huge mention should be made of the Jersey Child Care Trust, who have been, and still are, working to achieve a fair system for all our three- and four-year-olds. There are many others, too, who should be noted for their efforts in this area, including all those individuals (parents, nursery workers, various experts and politicians) who took part in the JCCT’s recent consultation on the matter.
All of Jersey, and not just parents of three- and four-year-olds who will benefit, should be crossing their fingers – and toes – for the debate. Today’s youngsters are tomorrow’s politicians, doctors, emergency service workers, police, teachers, financiers and so on, and everyone knows that the effort invested early on reaps the reward a hundredfold.
Let’s hope that our States Members choose to spend our money wisely by investing in our three- and four-year-olds’ nursery education – and Jersey’s future.
