‘Don’t follow Guernsey’
Wednesday 17th September 2008, 3:00PM BST.
THE formation of Guernsey United FC and its proposed move into the Football Association pyramid system is not a step Jersey should look to follow. That is the opinion of Jersey Football Association chief executive officer Paul Creeden, who has seen it happen before with Newport, Isle of Wight. He says it has its downfalls as a club moves up the league.Creeden said: ‘What Guernsey do is up to them but I think it would be a mistake for Jersey to go down the same route because I’ve seen what happened to Newport from the Isle of Wight when I was involved with the Hampshire FA.’It went very well for them at the start as they moved up the divisions and through the leagues but the further they went the harder it became because they did not have the strength in depth. That’s when they started to bring in outsiders and because they were in the Ryman League the players want wages [which were unofficial] and that created further problems.’
