Record number try for Senator
Wednesday 17th September 2008, 3:00PM BST.
A RECORD 21 candidates were nominated last night to stand in the Senatorial election.
The candidates – eight States Members, including three ministers, and 13 newcomers – will hit the hustings trail next Tuesday night in St Clement.
There will be three vacant Senatorial seats because Chief Minister Frank Walker, Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard and Senator Len Norman are stepping down, although Senator Norman is expected to stand for St Clement Constable tonight.
The candidates have promised to visit every parish between now and the election on 15 October, and also want to hold two ‘open hustings’ where voters can meet them individually to ask questions. A similar event was held during the 2005 elections at Fort Regent.
Nomination meetings for Constables take place tonight.
The Senatorial candidates are Jersey Consumer Council chairman Deputy Alan Breckon; Public Accounts Committee chairman Deputy Sarah Ferguson; environmental campaigner Mark Forskitt; Battle of Britain commemoration organiser Mike Higgins; therapist Cliff Le Clercq; Time 4 Change campaigner Nick Le Cornu; Jeremy Maçon, the youngest-ever candidate; former Magistrate Ian Le Marquand; Assistant Economic Development Minister Deputy Alan Maclean; Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf; environmental campaigner Nick Palmer; tourism campaigner Mick Pashley;
environmental campaigner Chris Perkins; Jersey Democratic Alliance chairman Trevor Pitman; Social Security Minister Paul Routier; Economic Scrutiny chairman Deputy Geoff Southern; Time 4 Change campaigner Montfort Tadier; Assistant Social Security Minister Deputy Peter Troy; Education Minister Mike Vibert; business intelligence analyst Adrian Walsh; environmental campaigner Daniel Wimberley.

Remember lads and lady, that in 2005 a lot of the candidates misled us all regardng GST and the millennium park in town. Three years later GST is in and the park is still out. Hustings is a time to be honest and tell us your agendas so we can vote correctly. Lie to us and like elephants we don’t forget.
