Election for Constable: St Mary

Thursday 18th September 2008, 2:54PM BST.

ST Mary will have an election for Constable.

Parish Deputy Juliette Gallichan and Chef de Police Terry Renouf will contest an election for the job on 15 October.
They are vying to replace sitting Constable Ken Le Brun who is stepping down from office, having held the seat since 2000.

At last night’s nomination meeting at the Parish Hall – attended by around 40 parishioners – the candidates were introduced by their proposers. Deputy Gallichan (46) is a former parish secretary, and Mr Renouf (51) is the assistant manager of parking control for the Transport Department.

With Mr Le Brun’s advice – ‘don’t make it too long’ – ringing in their ears, Emma Devenport and Myrtle Le Marquand proposed their respective candidates.

Mrs Devenport said that Mr Renouf was born, educated and raised in the parish where his family had run the garage, the forge, shop and post office. ‘He has given half of his life to the parish as a Constable’s Officer, Centenier and Chef de Police,’ she said. ‘Terry’s desire is to serve the parish as indeed he has done for most of his life.’ She said that Mr Renouf had a reputation for consistency, and was always willing to help others.

Mrs Le Marquand said that as a States Member for the last three years, Deputy Gallichan had taken on several different roles in the Chamber and made ‘regular and well-informed’ contributions to debates. She said that the Deputy was ‘very approachable, compassionate and down to earth. ‘She is a dedicated member of this community and since her first days as parish secretary she has had this parish in her heart,’ said Mrs Le Marquand.
The 1,112 registered voters in St Mary will go to the polls on 15 October.
