No time for answers?

VOTERS can expect little more than soundbites in response to their questions at Senatorial hustings.
The record number of Senatorial candidates has forced tough restrictions on both the length of speeches and the answers to questions.
There are 21 candidates for six Senatorial seats this year, so there will be time for only a handful of questions at each meeting. Candidates have agreed to limit their opening speeches to three minutes, and to spend no more than one minute answering questions from the floor.
The candidates agreed on the format for the hustings after Tuesday’s nomination meeting. They have also now decided the dates on which the events will be held.
In addition to the 12 parish hustings meetings which are being held between next Tuesday and Monday 13 October, all starting at 7.30 pm, there will also be a dedicated ‘countryside hustings’ at the same time and two six-hour ‘Meet the Candidates’ events running from 10 am to 4 pm.

The 11th Great Garden Bird Watch took place over the weekend, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February. JEP readers were asked to get on board to help monitor bird life in the Island.
A big field like that should boost the chances of the well known faces.
Add in the fact that some of these candidates have deep pockets or mates who do not mind shelling out on their behalf and some are going to start with a huge lead over the pack.

There are discussions going on among the candidates about how to open this up so that more questions are taken. It is obviously undemocratic for just 2 or 3 questions to be put when it could easily be more, using various methods.

How are we expected to make a choice to vote if they are only allowed a few questions. If they started early they would have more time, or how about having a 10am start on a saturday?

You can ask as many questions as you like. They will say what you want to hear, and once elected, renege on any promises or pledges. It’s called “politics”.
