Constable to try again to make States pay rates
Saturday 20th September 2008, 9:55AM BST.
THE Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, is making another attempt to make the States pay rates on their buildings.
Under the Rates Law, the States do not have to pay parish rates on their properties like businesses and householders do. Mr Crowcroft says that despite promises, ministers are dragging their feet on the issue. And he says that as a result, the ‘urban’ parishes are losing out.
Under his proposition, lodged on Tuesday, taxpayers would have to pay just over £800,000 in rates bills to the parishes.
The breakdown would mean windfalls for the parishes of:
• £567,725 for St Helier.
• £119,975 for St Saviour
• £37,720 for St Brelade.
• £29,785 for St Peter.
• £14,470 for St Clement.

A proportionate and sensible proposition.
Why should the rate payer of ‘Parish A’ subsidise the tax payer of ‘Parish B’? So obvious, why has it not been proposed before?
