When and where did you pass your test and how many times did you take it?
In 1979. I took my motorcycle and car test in the same week and passed both first time, in Nottingham
Your first car?
An Austin Allegro. I was so proud of that car, with its double overhead cam (I never knew what that was but was told it was important), auto-reverse cassette player, all state-of-the-art, although the cassette player was stolen in the first week. The car kept rusting and I replaced wings and different parts, all different colours, from the local scrapyard. When it finally broke down, it looked like a Benetton advert.
Your favourite car?
My current car, which is a BMW Z4M.
Your worst car?
An Alfa Romeo Spider. Awful car – two new engines in two years.
Your dream car?
The Audi R8. When I was a kid we used to see films of what the future would be like, and the Audi fits all those images and the dreams I had of cars as a child.
Your favourite drives?
Glasgow to Fort William provides breathtaking scenery. You have to stop every two minutes to admire the view. And the road in France that ends in Gras is terrifying. I have to say I am also very lucky to have a stunning drive into work each morning down into St Brelade’s Bay.
Your motorsport heroes?
I was a great fan of Nigel Mansell, as he let the car do the talking. Carl Fogarty, the former world Superbike champion, is also a hero of mine.
Driving ambitions?
To travel across America either in a classic open-top American car or on a motorbike.
Do you think you are a good driver?
I am okay. Not great, but not a bad driver.
What do you always carry with you on long journeys?
Lots of music and audio books. I love satnav – not in Jersey, but on my trips in the UK. Unfortunately, I don’t know where anywhere is any more, I am so used to the little device telling me what to do.
What makes you angry when you are driving?
I don’t get angry when I am driving. However, when driving in the UK the levels of stress you witness never fail to amaze me. The beauty of Jersey is that driving is so calm, relaxed and especially courteous.
Have you ever been involved in a crash?
Yes, but only on motorcycles. The last crash I had helped me to make the decision that bikes are dangerous – or I should say that cars are dangerous when they run into motorcycles.
What do you listen to when you are driving?
I like to have a range of music to suit my mood, and podcasts, because I get bored easily.
How could Jersey’s roads be improved?
It would be wonderful if the morning traffic jams to St Helier could be improved. I don’t have the solution, but surely
car-sharing would be a start. It would also ease the parking issues in town. It is ironic that we have the highest ratio of cars per person than anywhere else in the country.
Do you clean your car, and if so, how often?
Very rarely – I pay someone else to do it. He does a much better job than I ever would.
