On Saturday afternoon Ken Moore (51) spotted the stranded pair struggling in the water by Seymour Tower and immediately launched his two-man kayak and paddled out to save them from the incoming tide.

‘I was in my garden pottering around when I noticed the man and a young boy in trouble out at the tower,’ said Mr Moore, who lives in Grande Route des Sablons, Grouville. I saw from my balcony that the water was past the young lad’s chest and I realised that they were not going to make it, so I got my wife to phone the rescue service and I went out on my kayak to get them.’

As Mr Moore reached the casualties the water was rising past the 11-year-old boy’s neck and the father was visibly shaken. Mr Moore helped them both into his canoe and paddled the stranded father and son through the choppy water back to shore. Both were checked by paramedics and although they were cold and a little shocked, they were allowed to go home.

The worrying thing is the report in the paper edition that when people get cut off by the tide they do not realise they can climb the ladder of the rescue beacon which is there for just this purpose.

It is suggested that a sign needs to be put up telling people to climb the rescue beacon ladder if they get stuck.

I don’t reckon I’d need a sign to tell me do this if I was up to my waist in water and cut off by the tide.

Then again it may simply reveal how when we in a life threatening situation it is easy to overlook options.

And you are looking for heroes?
Isn’t this what makes a hero – to put your own life on the line to selflessly help some one in danger………………….
