This was no way to behave at the wheel of a moving car

Wednesday 1st October 2008, 2:58PM BST.

From J Hanner.
RECENTLY I watched a woman drive past me in Bath Street at about 4 pm steering with one hand happily chatting away on her mobile phone. She then turned down Gas Place, still on the phone, and then she stopped the car.

I also stopped and said to her that she should not be using the phone while driving, so should get off the phone (this is one of my pet hates). She locked the car and flicked her head at me as if I was the servant, then drove off again, still using the phone.

But to my disgust, I saw a small child in the back and a little girl in the front seat not even in a child car seat or with even a seatbelt on. I thought there were laws to protect children in cars? Maybe not.

There should be more done to stop drivers with mobile phones. Either that, or it should be made easier to report these offenders to the police. There should also be someone doing something about child safety in cars.

How would this woman feel if it was a member of her family killed by another driver using a mobile phone? It’s the same old story – ‘It will never happen to me’.
