Trio bring home medals
Thursday 2nd October 2008, 2:58PM BST.
THE three members of Cho’s Taekwon-do (Jersey) club who competed in the Tae Kwon Do AIMAA Irish National Championships in Dublin last weekend returned with two gold medals, and a silver.
Former Polish national team member Monika Markowska won gold after two bouts in the black belt (under 55 kilo) category, while Miguel Ferreira won gold for black belt (under 72 kilos) and David Gouveia won silver, in his first competitive event, in the under-72 kilo (brown belt) category.
‘Because I used to fight on behalf of the Polish national side, perhaps I was expected to win a medal,’ said Markowska afterwards, ‘But for David to win silver and Miguel to win gold was more unexpected.
Small club
‘The Irish national championships is a really big competition, with over 600 people taking part, and to come from such a small club in Jersey and to do so well is a tremendous achievement. I’d also like to compliment Robert Fernandes, our head instructor, who went with us and helped guide us to our success. I know that he was as delighted as we were, to come away with two gold medals and a silver.’
