Threat to 30 jobs at Ronez

The company has begun a consultation process ahead of a restructuring of the business and yesterday informed its employees that there could be job losses. The news was greeted with anger by the union that represents the road crews. Nick Corbel, of the Unite Union, said: ‘My first impression is that this could be horrific for the guys likely to be affected. There is nowhere else for them to go.’

It is known that some worried workers have already been contacting other local firms seeking employment as they fear they are going to be made redundant. Mr Corbel said that some of the workers whose jobs are under threat are long-serving employees of the company, which has operated in Jersey under the Ronez name since the early 1960s but its predecessors have been quarrying at the St John since the 1600s.

Ronez managing director Mike Osborne said that the company opened the consultation period yesterday to allow the staff to be aware of the restructuring plan. He said that the consultation period would be at least 30 days, in keeping with industrial relations best practice under UK guidelines.
