Afghan coach working on mental toughness

WORLD Cricket League Division 5 winners Afghanistan plan to cause more problems for Jersey’s World Cup qualifying campaign tomorrow.
New coach Kabir Khan, a former Pakistan international and UAE coach, has vowed to add mental toughness to the talented side who beat Jersey in a dramatic two-wicket Division V final win at Grainville earlier this year.
As the teams start their ICC World Cricket League Division IV tournament today – Jersey facing hosts Tanzania –, Khan claims Afghanistan’s dreams for a place in the World Cup 2011 are very much alive – despite having spent little more than a fortnight with his new squad.
‘I have only had 15 days to work with the team before the start of the tournament, which is probably not enough,’ he said. ‘They don’t need a lot of coaching cricketing wise – they just need help with the mental side of the game. The standard of bowling and fielding is excellent, but sometimes the batting lets the side down.’
