We’ve been there before

Thursday 9th October 2008, 3:00PM BST.

From Ed and Anne Martin.
WE are not residents of Jersey but have been following the debate on the time-change referendum with great interest.

We remember very well the time experiment of 1968 to 1971 and how depressing it was to go to work in the dark for months on end as well as the general sense of malaise that spread through the population.

Our situation in the south of England was not as bad as that in the north (sunrise in London in December was at 9.04 am) but in Newcastle it was at 9.24 am in December and in Glasgow at 9.50 am.

The Scots are normally blamed for the failure of the experiment but the facts do not bear this out. Opinion polls at the time showed that the experiment was very unpopular in all areas and during the Parliamentary debate on whether to keep it, MPs from all parts of the UK, including Wales and Northern Ireland, spoke against it. As a result it was resoundingly rejected by 366 votes to 81.

In Portugal they also implemented a similar time change but subsequently rejected it, as did the UK.
