Create more allotments

From June Beslièvre.
I HEARTILY endorse the letter by Maya Hammarsal in JEP of 6 October about supermarkets entitled ‘Don’t sell out to the fat cats’.

Not so long ago we had a Morrisons where Safeway now is but that didn’t last long. How many people who want a Tesco or Asda have thought about the amount of land that will be gobbled up to take one of these massive outlets? With the Waterfront becoming full with other buildings the only suitable site I can think of that would be big enough is out at Plémont.

However, it was the mention of setting up allotments in the letter that caught my attention most. With so many people living in pokey bed-sit accommodation and small flats, I have never understood why more isn’t done to set up allotments for those who need somewhere to grow their own vegetables, etc.

Perhaps it’s the idea of the garden sheds that puts the authorities off but there’s no reason why small fields couldn’t be used for these and, properly laid out with hedging around, there’d be no need for someone to even see the sheds when passing by. I’d like to see some in every parish.

Our schools today are doing a lot to promote these types of outdoor activities with children delighting in growing things of their own. What could be better than for them to accompany their mum or dad to an allotment and continue their interest. After all, it is said: ‘One’s nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.’
