Signs of a good turnout

Wednesday 15th October 2008, 9:13PM BST.

0595645_cropped.jpgAFTER steady polling across the Island throughout the day, votes are now being counted in Jersey’s first three-tier election.

A record 21 candidates are vying for six Senatorial seats in the States and four parishes are also staging contested elections for Constable. In addition, voters have been given the opportunity to vote in Jersey’s first referendum for or against the introduction of Central European Time, which would add an extra hour of daylight.

Polls closed at 8 pm and the first results are expected at about 9.30.

Can one say it is a good turn out when one doesn’t know exactly how many people live on this Island. The States stopped the last census and then committed to a growth strategy and the imagine Jersey consultation without all the facts. I know lots of people who didn’t vote and I am sure there are also lots of others who are not even registered to vote. If you total the number of votes cast last night for the Senator elections it comes to ……..115,149!
Therefore what exactly is the true population figure????????

Ben Queree states that there was a record turn-out yesterday, that surprises me as I calculate that 26804 people did not turn out.

This election was unique in that it is the first time the constables agreed to stand down en bloc and to go for reelection, albeit that some reneaged, some retired and others were unopposed. This was also the first time those aged 16 and over were given the opportunity to vote.

I therefore think it somewhat disingenuous to claim that the turnout was a ‘record’.
