0594904_cropped.jpgCOLLECTORS from Germany, Guernsey and the UK flew in for a frenzied auction war in the Island this week.

One of Jersey’s biggest private collections of German Second World War memorabilia fetched a record £12,500.
Auctioneer and valuer Simon Drieu said: ‘We had considerable interest and it was an unbelievably busy sale.
‘We had several bidders fly in for it which ended with frenzied bidding. The items were bought by private collectors and the majority of the lot has remained in the Island.’

Around 300 bargain hunters gathered at Glencoe, St Lawrence, to see a range of war memorabilia go under the hammer including medals and badges for around £200 each and swords, knives, uniforms and two live firearms – a 1940 Luger 9mm pistol and a 1941 Mauser 938 pistol. One was snapped up for around £2,500.

Mr Drieu, who auctions off about 500-600 lots every week, said: ‘Without doubt it was the biggest and only collection that has come under the hammer in my 16 years in business.’ The collection was sold from the estate of a ‘very keen and active collector’.
