Mont Orgueil with a modern touch

MONT Orgueil castle has become one of the Island’s most popular locations for weddings, birthday parties and corporate events.
The imposing structure, which dominates the skyline in Gorey, is the ‘must have’ location for events and is so popular that a marquee could be erected inside the grounds for the whole of the summer. At present marquees are erected whenever there is a booking and taken down immediately afterwards.
The castle, which was built in the 13th century, is also a site of special interest, which meant that a number of people opposed the erection of a marquee on the site when the initial application went in last year. The trust applied to Planning to erect a summer marquee in October last year but was advised to review the design of the tent and the way in which it was fixed to the ground.
At that time there were up to ten objections, with people concerned about the impact a marquee would have on the historic element of the castle. This month Jersey Heritage put in amended plans for a ‘medieval’ style of tent on the eastern lawn of Mont Orgueil Castle from 1 May until 30 September each year. And they no longer want to excavate the grounds to secure the tent. If they get Planning approval it will mean that they will not have to apply every year for permission.

Not a good idea! it will soon have tears and loose ropes and then everyone will say it’s someone else’s responsibility to fix and tidy up! 2 winters and it will look shabby and discoloured with the grass dead and dying around the edges with mud everywhere. Will everyone have to have the same amount of wedding guests to make it look full? I pity the young couple that want only very close friends and family, say 20 people!
