Minister acts to help Landsbanki depositors
Monday 20th October 2008, 2:57PM BST.
ECONOMIC Development Minister Philip Ozouf was this morning drafting letters to the Guernsey and Icelandic governments on behalf of Islanders who lost money when Landsbanki Guernsey collapsed.
He said that his aim was to ‘raise awareness and put pressure’ on the two jurisdictions to repay those who had lost their life savings. His announcement follows a meeting on Friday called by the Jersey Landsbanki Action Group at the Town Hall.
The meeting was a chance for depositors to discuss the way forward and make sure that they were all pushing in the same direction together. Around 60 people attended and the action group has now agreed to form a committee and work alongside a similar group in Guernsey which is fighting the case for Landsbanki depositors there.
One saver who lost thousands when Landsbanki Guernsey went under said that she felt more positive after Friday’s meeting. However, she said that many people did not share her optimism. Senator Ozouf said that he had attended the meeting at the invitation of the organiser, action group founder Peter Wall.
