THE explosive finale planned at Samarès Manor this weekend has been cancelled after residents voiced concerns that the explosions could terrify people living nearby.

The decision was taken by Jersey historians Peter Tabb and Howard Baker, Squadron Leader David Rotherham, who is the contingent commander of Victoria College Combined Cadet Force, and James Bevis, from Starburst Fireworks.

The group decided that they had to respond in a positive way to public concerns about the level of noise expected from the event at 8 am on Sunday.

Mr Tabb, in a statement released last night, said: ‘Although the noise of the barrage would have added a spectacular element to the experience for the cadets, it has become abundantly clear that there were real public concerns about the noise and thus we took an immediate decision to do away with the “bang”.
‘We will still be able to create a very credible experience for the cadets and spectators alike, and their appreciation of what life would have been like in a frontline trench will still be very real.’
