Let’s pull together

From Roger Perrot.
I FULLY agree with Peter Body (JEP, 14 October) in his view that the Channel Islands ought to co-operate much more closely which each other – perhaps even developing a federation of some sort. I have been banging on about this for years.
I think that there has been in the past a practical problem in getting our political people to begin working towards this. Notwithstanding the huge criticism which has been made of them in both islands over the last couple of years, the more able politicians (of which there are precious few) occupy senior posts and they have been fully occupied in crisis management of one form or another. They have been too pre-occupied to give proper attention to our external relations.
Far too many of the also-rans are either too gormless and/or populist to give objective and constructive thought to how best to protect these islands together from the malignancies of such institutions as the European Union and the OECD. Fortunately, both islands are now considering their external relations (in respect of which Jersey has been in the lead) and it might just be that, at long last, our leading politicians will see the merit of a greater fusion of interests.
Peter Body has misrepresented me in the past in respect of an important point. I am not advocating (other than in the most dire circumstances) complete independence from the Crown: rather, a changed relationship.
