Plémont: States will talk to site’s owners

Thursday 23rd October 2008, 2:59PM BST.

00540826_2_cropped.jpgISLANDERS could soon know how much it will cost to buy back the Plémont Holiday Village and return it to nature.

The States yesterday agreed by 37 votes to six to enter into talks with the site’s owners about their willingness to sell.

If they are prepared to sell the picturesque headland to the States, the discussions will then move on to a possible price, the proposition said.

St Ouen Constable Ken Vibert put the proposal before the House. It called for negotiations to be opened and suggested that any outcome should be reported back to the States so that Members could decide what further action, if any, to take. He stressed that it was a very simple decision and explained that the difficult decision would have to be made if and when the States had to decide whether or not to buy the land.

to the owners. be brave and do something for tourism. a nice self contained development in that area of the island would sell out like hot cakes, with the added views and fine bay below, and who knows even macdonald stores may open up again as it used to be.

this is our chance to put right one of the worst mistakes ever made in Jersey in Planning terms. This headland should be returned to Nature as soon as possible as a signal of the States of Jersey’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing our greatest LONG TERM asset – our beautiful landscapes.

The owner is responsible for the area.
If I was to leave my property in such a derelict condition, then I am pretty sure that the States of Jersey would make me clean up and demolish the building, it is again one rule for us plebs and another rule for others.

I disagree with the prospect of the states buying back the headland. They seriously need to rain in spending, not fret over the headland.

It certainly is a beautiful spot, but what a place for tourists to stay. Done well it would be an awesome holiday retreat and a boost to tourism.

Drop the idea about buying it back to grass it over. Pump the money into housing for those that can’t afford it and leave the current owners of the headland to come up with a scheme which that will add to the area and toursim. Heck, why not build some first time buyer homes there!

The States have been raining spending for years. And of the main reasons why this site is so utterly unsuited to major development is the tiny windy little access road that serves Plemont beach and the old Pontin’s site. Ever tried to drive down there in summer? It’s bad enough with the beach traffic but will logjam as soon as you add in housing or a major tourism development. But there’s more than that to this issue. This site is deeply symbolic and is the most crass example of the disastrous and unsustainable attitudes of past politicians and business people. It needs to be put back to Nature for many reasons but one of those is as a signal that the old ways of doing things are over. Our future depends on us respecting our environment and working with it. If not, we have no future. Putting right this bad mistake is as much an act of faith as anything else. Or perhaps an apology.
