Prices: Good news at last

Thursday 23rd October 2008, 3:00PM BST.

0565034_cropped.jpgAFTER being hit by months of bad news about soaring fuel and energy prices, Islanders have finally been given something to celebrate.

Motor Mall today slashed the price of fuel to a new record low for 2008.

And Jersey Gas has also given Islanders a glimmer of hope. The company has promised residents that it is going to review the current costs of their energy tariffs — and prices could drop before Christmas.

The price of petrol per litre has flown past the £1 mark this year, but Motor Mall this morning dropped the price to 79.9p per litre. General manager Ashley Dee said that he was delighted to be able to slash the price at the pumps.

It may be good news on prices in the short term but the medium term is looking distinctly unpleasant.

Prices are falling due to global recession and falling demand. When the economy recovers, prices will start to move ahead again rapidly.
We could be looking at a rerun of the stagflation of the seventies.

So why have i just received a letter from the JEC saying that prices are to increase by 25%?

The JEC is still States owned, so the States should be telling them to freeze thier prices rises while other energy bills are falling.

Not complaing but given that oil is almost 50% off it 2008 high, I don’t really consider this a remarkable event. Question that should be asked is why it has taken so long, and why so little!

Mark and PJG: The JEC prices we are paying are 3 years old. Energy costs have soared since then so the 25% rise is in line with that. The situation is akin renewing the fixed rate on your mortgage which has risen sharply. Electricity prices should still cheaper than the UK where a family of 3 are paying well over £1000 per year.

Joker: Fair comment but the point i was making is that the headlines are ‘Prices:Good News at Last’ and i have just recieved a letter stating a 25% increase in my electric, wheres the good news?
Fuel prices, Food Prices and in the near future Household energy prices (UK) have fallen over the last month and look set to fall further, oil may go up a little to account for the freeze on 1.5 million barrels of oil a day by COPEC but the prices have dropped dramatically since a few months ago. So back to my original comment: “why have i just received a letter from the JEC saying that prices are to increase by 25%?” when others are going to reverse theirs?

Joker- in the UK we pay nothing like a thousand a year for gas and electricity combined which covers all our heating, cooking etc-we don’t use oil at all – so not sure where you get your figure from.We have a four bedroomed house and although we are just a couple we keep the house fully heated in winter as we have visitors quite often and grandchildren here frequently and so do use all the rooms. Our fuel bills are far less than they were at the time we left Jersey two years ago.

With reference to the question of the JEC increasing costs- why is it that the electricity they buy from the French is nuclear powered ,is not oil dependent, and furthermore they have not increased charges to the French population of both Normandy and Brittany? We truly are mugs of the highest order.

Mark: back to my response… the prices we a paying are those agreed 3 years ago. Energy prices will rise again as you correctly point out about the controlling of oil production. Until the (UK) government has a say in how much oil is produced we will always be at the mercy of the barons.

So, acording to joker we should see JEC prices being reduced in 3 years time
    I wait with bated breath

To see that the fuel suppliers are ripping us off in Jersey, just compare our prices to Guernsey.

Joker, we are a family of 5 living in Jersey our standing orders for electricity is £100 a month and our gas has just gone up to to £145 per month and the gas we only use in the evening as we cannot afford to keep the house warm all day. I for one would like the prices to go down immediately (but they won’t) ~!!!!!!!
