The bullies’ mantra is: ‘If you’re not with us, you’re against us’

From Deputy Roy Le Hérissier.
I DEPLORE bullying from whatever source it comes be it the internet or the approach of some members of the executive.

Unfortunately, your editorial (JEP, 20 October) focuses on the internet and overlooks the bigger picture to which Deputy Baudains was drawing attention.

The advent of ministerial government has been marked by an intensification of the thinking that, ‘If you are not one of us, you are against us.’ This has led to the marginalisation of Members who dare to question the executive as if dissent is some form of treachery. Because of its entrenched voting majority when it comes to most key issues, the executive has developed a view that it is impregnable.

Witness the massive amount of legislation that has gone through for the forthcoming IMF visit and contrast it to the foot dragging over freedom of information, electoral reform or the appointment of a financial ombudsman.

Senator-elect Le Marquand may be right that the States lacks people of calibre to fill positions like that of Chief Minister. However, his skills and talents should also be directed to making the States a more inclusive body and breaking down the ‘them and us’ attitude which has come to dominate.
