Prospective politicians would do well to follow the example of Senator John Le Marquand

SO, your correspondent Brian Hotton (JEP, 22 October) thinks there is no place for politicians of restricted capabilities in government.
I have to remind him that all persons, however bright, have restricted capabilities, whether in government or not, and like most capabilities, some people are better in some areas than others. Intellectual and analytical abilities are a case in point, but politicians bring a mix of factors to a government which, to my mind, makes for a more rounded States Assembly.
Good basic intelligence and education are essential, but so too is strong ethical character, experience in business and a good understanding of people in general. Commitment and determination to do what is best for the Island and its people are also essential factors, sometimes at the risk of being unpopular with some. No, you don’t have to have a PhD in something to be a good politician.
And I don’t fully agree with Senator-elect Ian Le Marquand that no one in the States has the capability of being the Chief Minister, as I can think of quite a few who could, indeed, earn more money in the private sector. However, as someone who voted for Mr Le Marquand, I am sure he has much to offer in the States.
This brings me to Mr Le Marquand’s late namesake, John Le Marquand, who, in my opinion, is the eminent political role model. He combined caring for his Island and people, was successful in his political career and was much liked and respected by the people. All this as a result of intelligence, hard work, determination, commitment and sincerity.
John Le Marquand is a hard act to follow, but it is well worth paying attention to his successful career and sincerity, for any person aspiring to high office.
