The cancer of the past is still growing

IF an allegation of physical abuse is made against a teacher in Jersey, then surely, for the safety of both teacher and pupil, that teacher is suspended on full pay, and an investigation is held into the allegations. Surely, also, the teacher remains suspended until they are cleared of the charge?

In a society that should stress responsibility and tackle injustice and be seen to be tackling it, how can it be that the senior civil servant named by Senator Syvret and confirmed to the JEP by Deputy Le Hérissier, has not been suspended, on full pay, while under investigation by the police for suspected abuse? In the Daily Telegraph of 2 March 2008, the Dean of Jersey, The Very Reverend Bob Key is quoted as saying: ‘Jersey has a cancer from its past which a surgeon needs to remove expertly and completely.’

By not taking responsibility, Senator Walker, the Chief Minister, ex-Senator Mike Vibert as Education Minister and Bill Ogley, the chief executive of the States of Jersey, have plainly failed Jersey. The cancer the Dean talked about, is still alive and growing.
