Alex Henderson (20) completed the New York Marathon in 4 hr 30 min 11 sec to raise money for Get Kids Going which helps disabled children to become involved in sport. Alex, who is in his third year of a law degree at Queen Mary University in London, has been training for the marathon in between attending lectures and writing assignments as well as a hectic volunteering schedule.

Keen sportsman Alex, who plays basketball for Jersey, regularly helps out at the Whitechapel Mission which provides meals and clothes to the homeless. He also works with human rights organisation Liberty and donates time to helping out at the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre in London.

His mother, Michelle Donnelly, who travelled to New York with him, said that Alex had been training for the marathon most of the year and that he had lots of support from local people and businesses. ‘Alex was able to enjoy running on the beaches and green lanes of Jersey during the summer, but the majority of his training has been done in London,’ she said.

‘He has received generous support from family and friends and also from the directors and staff at Dominion Corporate Group and the IRC. If you would like to support him then please donate online at www.justgiving.com/alexhendo and all sponsorship goes directly to the charity.’

Get Kids Going helps people up to the age of 26 get involved in sport by providing specially built sports’ wheelchairs and offering support for training, physiotherapy and travel. The charity already helps children in the Channel Islands such as Guernsey basketball player Adrian Vidamour, but they are keen to do more.
