Let’s avoid making left-wing mistakes

Tuesday 4th November 2008, 2:59PM GMT.

From Craig Leach.
IT is not surprising that election candidates are falling over themselves to capitalise on the campaign results obtained by our left-wing directed Consumer Council. Results obtained by giving just one side of the story and by not specifying alternatives.

So what are the tax and saving alternatives favoured by the Left? They include a new transaction tax on the banks (great for jobs that one), higher income taxes (our competitors are reducing theirs), reducing social security supplementation (that would reduce pensions) and the most likely runner in the short term, a new land tax.

So get ready for the ‘No to land tax’ campaign on the basis that the tax bears no relationship to ability to pay. Perhaps Age Concern could organise the campaign to protect struggling elderly home owners.
Before long we may well be saying, ‘Oh why, oh why, did we not take the advice, learn from the mistakes of the UK, avoid employing extra civil servants and keep a low simple tax in conjunction with the best in social security.’

Readers and candidates interested in learning from the mistakes of the UK should google ‘Mirrlees review’.
