Madeira manager’s rallying call
Tuesday 4th November 2008, 3:00PM GMT.
MADEIRA arrive in the Island on Thursday with the intention of winning the international football tournament against Gibraltar and Jersey this weekend.
And team manager Rui Mancio is calling for Madeiran nationals in Jersey to come out in force and support their team. Mancio said: ‘We are coming with the intention of winning; I’m not sure if we can win – but we will have a good try with our young team.
‘I’m told there are a lot of Madeirans in Jersey and I urge them to come out and support their island team. We have a young team with the majority of players under the age of 20. We have three 21-year-olds and one who is 23.
‘This tournament is a fantastic idea and it would be great if it is something that remains and maybe we can play it every two years and in a different island. The majority of our players play in what is known as our local non-league and many of them still have hopes of one day playing professionally.’
