Budget supermarket for Jersey?

Alliance Cash and Carry is a low-cost retailer with a 26,000 sq ft store on the Braye Road Industrial Estate in Guernsey that sells discounted meat, fish, household items and fresh food in bulk. It operates out of a warehouse-style building in Guernsey and supplies goods to Alderney and Sark.

The store’s managing director, Andrew Bagot, who used to work for CI Traders, said that he had looked at potential sites in Jersey. He said: ‘Our customers in Guernsey are concerned about a lot of things, including price, and judging by their reaction to us, we work very well.

‘I think there could be a place such as ours in Jersey if the right opportunity came up, as we are fairly unique in what we are doing and I think we would work well in Jersey. My opinion is that it is all about the customers and they will decide if they want us, and if a suitable site were to become available, then we would certainly be looking at it.’

I do not understand why States delay introduction of independent supermarket. Prices are sky high and families find it very difficult to cope at the moment. I wonder how we are going to survive next year.
Dear Senators, not everyone is paid your salary!

    Chris,

Given that it is obvious Jersey needs a deep discount store and there is property/premises available, (you only have to look around a bit to see that) it is fairly obvious that vested interests are out in force here.

We have the best politicians money can buy. Trouble is, there are some that see beyond their salary to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. On the subject of gold, you have to remember Jersey’s true golden rules: When you have the gold, you can make the rules, break the rules or just ignore them as you see fit.

Anybody who thinks brining in a “Tesco” type retailer into the island is going to improve things is sadly misguided.
