Deserved victory for Madeira

Saturday 8th November 2008, 10:00AM GMT.

00600020.jpgTHE inaugural JFA International Football Tournament was opened with some style at a cold Springfield last night as Madeira warmed their fans with an excellent 2-0 victory over Gibraltar.

But forget the 2-0 scoreline if you want an accurate indication of the play. Island Games champions Gibraltar, even taking into account their being reduced to ten men early in the second half, were extremely fortunate to get off with a 2-0 defeat in which clever striker Mario Fernanadez scored both goals.

Madeira’s Rodrigues missed the penalty that resulted from the red card handling offence of Jansen Moreno, but the second of Mario Fernandez’s two goals, 20 minutes from time, sealed a deserved victory.

Gibraltar now play Jersey today, with the deciding match tomorrow against Madeira, both games at Springfield.
