Why do Jersey building firms not take on local teenage apprentices?

From Marion Kerr.
I CANNOT understand the building companies in Jersey which do not take on apprentices.

I have a teenage son who went to Highlands College on the Building Construction course. He received good grades and passed all the modules but cannot get a job as an apprentice.

After sending 157 copies of his CV to different building companies he received 40 very nice replies saying they were sorry but could not help and wishing him the best for the future.

I think something should be done to help teenagers achieve their ambition. The States and the building contractors should work together and get these teenagers into a job they are interested in and, in years to come, developers like Harcourt would not need to bring workers over to Jersey to construct the Waterfront. We could have our own.

Thing is they dont really need to bring them over now, the simple fact is they are cheaper. Locals are being discriminated against because the big companies only care about increasing profits so the cheaper the better.

This happened to my son over 4 years ago. He did the construction course and we wrote to just about every company on the Island and still he couldn’t get a job as an apprentice. The JEP even did a double page spread on his plight but still nothing came of that. Its not very encouraging to read that nothing has changed in the last four years. What is the point of running these courses at Highlands if there isn’t any link to apprentice schemes after?
