Kemp leads from front as Jersey gain revenge

Ben Harvey was not coach at the time, (he played No 10), but on Saturday he explained why this game in London 1 Division was one of the most satisfying, to date. ‘We played to a plan and put them under so much pressure that when they had the ball, they fully expected it to be turned over.

‘And while the older players like Nathan (Kemp), Kern (Yates), ‘V’ and Hendry played outstanding rugby, even the younger players were ruthless in their approach. My only concern was that with six minutes to go we didn’t chase very well; they counter-attacked and scored a try (which they also converted) when I was hoping we’d keep them to a “nil”.

‘But Nathan and Kern were full of running and Kemp in particular reminded me of Martin Johnson by his leadership qualities. Johnson was the kind of player who’d say: “Go run through that brick wall” and he’d do it by example, making a great hole in it so that you would feel confident enough to do the same.’
