Air miles earned on States travel don’t just fly out of the window

Tuesday 11th November 2008, 2:58PM GMT.

From Senator Terry Le Sueur, Treasury Minister.
I AM writing in response to Roger Bale’s letter (31 October). Air miles earned on States travel with British Airways booked via the preferred supplier for the States (travel agency Gray Dawes) automatically go into a central ‘pot’.

These air miles are used to offset the cost of future departmental travel costs as and when required.
For example, air miles were used to fund an Economic Development trip to India in February. It was a considerable saving for the States.

All public staff have to conform with States financial policy on travel-related spending. In essence, it should be necessary and prudent. The policy also sets out a code of conduct in respect of loyalty bonuses.
