Deputies had good reason to be absent

I AM puzzled by the lo-gic both of Ann House (JEP, 8 November) and Alan Breckon.

Ann House says that Deputies Guy de Faye and Jacqui Huet have insulted her by being absent from their nomination meeting. I have been at many meetings which the nominated person was unable to attend due to a prior en-gagement and no one was offended.

Surely, both Guy de Faye and Jacqui Huet were absent on States business, and, had they failed in their duties, they would have been accused of not doing their job. In particular Guy de Faye, as part of the Jersey delegation, had no choice as to when the French officials would meet them.

With this sort of lo-gic I fear for democracy, as I did when I read Lauren Perkins’s letter (22 October) — I wrote to her but she did not reply — or of a youngster voting for someone because ‘he looks funny’ (7 November).
