Car parking spaces at work are not taxable

Thursday 13th November 2008, 2:57PM GMT.

From Paul Woodman.
I REFER to the letter from John Dix (11 November) questioning whether non-elected States Members who are provided with parking spaces are declaring these as benefits in kind on their tax returns.

Publishing this letter has the unfortunate effect of making both Mr Dix and the JEP look rather ignorant, as work parking spaces are specifically exempt from being taxable benefits (see paragraph 7bb of the benefits in kind guidance notes).

Publishing this letter could cause confusion and anxiety among other readers who have work parking spaces and may now believe that this is a taxable benefit, and who may also worry that they have under-declared tax in previous years.
