Will no one take on apprentices any more?

Thursday 13th November 2008, 2:57PM GMT.

From Raie Binet.
I WRITE yet again in support of another lady, Marion Kerr, who is desperately trying to find an apprenticeship for her son.

It must be very disheartening for this family, and many others, that after they have done all the right things, no one seems interested in creating apprenticeships.

Jersey must still have work in all trades involved in building, so surely it should be law that large building firms, in particular, should take apprentices in proportion to the number of people they employ.

Should not the Education Minister be using a voice here? The employment of young, willing people should be paramount at the moment.

Please would someone let us know who in the States is responsible for this matter, and why they are not doing anything to improve this regrettable situation?

There are too many cheaper options available in the form of non-local companies who bring over non-local workers thus preventing local firms from winnig tenders and employing local people.

It shouldn’t be happening but it is. Wonder why???
