Guccione ends Ward’s challenge at Les Ormes

GREAT British tennis hope James Ward has crashed out of the Caversham ATP Men’s Challenger in the final set tie-break of his second round game against Australian top seed Chris Guccione.

Wild card entrant Ward played a fantastic match – at several stages it was thought he might get the better of the world No 100 – but it was Guccione who hung on to book himself a place in the quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old Briton held his opponent in what was unquestionably the best match of the day, taking the first set, coming close in the second, and creating plenty of opportunities in the third.

In yesterday’s other big match, former world no. 12 Dominik Hrbatý proved no contest for German second seed Andreas Beck, who took a swift 6-3, 6-4 victory.
