Crowcroft: We have a crisis of leadership
Monday 17th November 2008, 2:56PM GMT.
THE Island is facing an unprecedented crisis of confidence in leadership, warns the man who considered running for Chief Minister.
The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, has cancelled an official visit to Bad Wurzach in Germany to stay in Jersey to try to take control of the ‘crisis’, following the suspension of the States police chief over the historical abuse investigation and the damning report by the Howard League for Penal Reform about the youth justice system.
Mr Crowcroft, who was due to fly out this morning to the German town where Channel Islanders were interned during the Second World War, said that he was particularly concerned about the way the historical abuse investigation at Haut de la Garenne was handled and the former practices at Greenfields youth remand home.
This afternoon he was due to meet Home Affairs Minister Andrew Lewis to seek answers over the way in which police chief Graham Power was suspended. At the weekend Mr Crowcroft informed States Members, through e-mail, of his concerns about the government’s treatment of senior staff and has called for urgent meetings into the matter.

I think most islanders are stunned by recent events.
The recent events in the Haut de la Garenne affair coupled with the Howard League report creates the impresssion that the senior politician’s hands are very far from the tiller.
How can so much go wrong?
How can so many highly paid and qualified individuals manage to produce such a colossal mess?
As for suggesting that the Police Chief should take early retirement, that almost beggars belief, we have allegations of cover ups flying everywhere and they suggest something that would look like a cover up.
I predict that we will be paying Mr Power some suitable sum in compensation in the future, £500K should do it
I would suggest that the Home Office Minister should resign but he is only going to be there for another few weeks.

good to see someone big enough to get in the ring.

It was about time someone with brains and a sensitive heart spoke loud about the outrageous recent decision in what should have proceeded to the very end of this long and obscure chapter in Jersey’s History and in British reputation for justice.
Hopefully Mr. Crowcroft manages to leap over the gruesome interests and devious conduct, so Haut de la Garenne can help the dozens of victims heal their lives and decas of silent suffering.
