Ronez quarry: Reports of its death greatly exaggerated

Monday 17th November 2008, 3:00PM GMT.

From Mike Osborne, managing director.
AS quarry operators, Ronez are acutely aware of the need for consideration of the impact of their operations on the local environment, and therefore I read with interest the comments made by John Fox (JEP, 12 November) relating to the potential impact of the La Collette compost site.

However, contrary to Mr Fox’s assumptions, the Ronez quarry at St John is not coming to the end of its working life in the next few years, and to answer his question directly, that is why it cannot be considered a viable alternative location for the compost site.

The natural mineral reserves at the St John site are considerable and represent a valuable natural resource for Jersey. The Island Plan review green paper notes a number of alternative scenarios for continued extraction, and while we must not make presumptions concerning the planning process, the life of our quarry is best measured in decades rather than years.
