THE current edition of The Week magazine reports that the new Ferrari California is priced at £143,000 and can achieve 0-62 mph in fewer than four seconds. The article continues: ‘It’s a good choice in these straitened times.’

Who could possibly need such acceleration? A bank robber? Maybe bank robbery is the surest way to realise £143,000 in these straitened times. If so, it seems a bit like putting the cart before the horse.
