If your face doesn’t fit, the picture was not taken at our booths

From Nigel Ryall, manager.
I READ with interest the letter ‘Does your face fit?’ (14 November).

Even the best intended bureaucracy falls foul of interpretation. To state that ‘the photo must cover 65% to 75% of the photo area’ is the most unscientific statement I have heard in a long time.

How did the official judge what is 65% to 75% of the photographic area? I don’t doubt that the head size of the photograph was too small and didn’t meet the criteria for the application. However, this is usually determined by precise measurement of certain facial features such as chin to forehead and location of eyes.

The booth which is the subject of the letter does not, however, belong to Auto Photos Ltd. Its booths, at the Airport and Fort Regent, have been calibrated to meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation standard.

This has been adopted by most governmental bodies in the world for the issue of passports, visas and driving licences. It lays down the precise tolerances for head size that can be used for such purposes.
