Nature’s rights: If Ecuador can do it, why can’t Jersey?

From Chris Perkins.
WITH reference to the environment being under attack, it should be noted that the government has said that ‘nature . . . where life is reproduced and exists, has the right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution. Every person, people, community or nationality, will be able to demand the recognition of rights for nature before public bodies.’

It would be good to think, therefore, that we are able to stand up for the rights of nature in the face of government excesses. However, the government that has been forward-thinking enough to give nature its own unalienable rights is that of Ecuador.

A wealthy first world state such as Jersey, whose government professes to care about our natural environment, should be able to match Ecuador. Unfortunately, in the recent Senatorial elections, the ‘Go for Growth’ party was successful. Their environmental policies were nothing more than a ‘greenwash’ to attract votes.

I wholeheartedly endorse Pete Double’s call to quiz would-be Deputies as to their environmental credentials. We need as many Deputies as possible who will stand up for our environment.
