Trust gets Jersey funds through to the Congo
Friday 21st November 2008, 3:01PM GMT.
MONEY raised by Islanders has reached its destination in the Democratic Republic of Congo, despite the violence in the country.
Jersey’s long-standing links with Anglican bishops in the Congo has meant that almost £2,200 which was donated to the Jersey Congo Trust Appeal has arrived safely at its destination, even though other humanitarian organisations have had problems getting aid into the country. The money, which was collected by Romerils, has been passed to local bishops to buy food, clothing and blankets for people displaced from their homes by the violence.
The Rev Jane Ilton, who has travelled to the area many times and is a member of Jersey’s Kindu Group, which works alongside the Jersey Congo Trust, said that the situation in the country was difficult but that the aid from Jersey would mean that up to 250 people would be provided with food.
A day of prayer and fasting, for those who can, to reflect on the current situation in Congo has been organised for tomorrow at St Mark’s Church between 10 am and 2 pm. Everyone is invited. More information about the appeal or Jersey’s Congo links is available from Mrs Ilton on 722327.
