Big wave test beckons Euro squad

JERSEY’S juniors will tackle monster waves to duel with some of the world’s finest U18 surfers at the biennial Junior European Surfing Championships in Morocco later this month.
Jersey Surfboard Club president and team manager Dave Ferguson has high hopes for the 14-strong CI squad, which includes Guernsey’s Jacob Warr. He said that the contest would prove to be a big mental and physical test for the youngsters, who will compete in Taghazout, Agadir, between 29 November and 7 December.
He said: ‘Bradley Ferguson and Alex Vibert have been to Taghazout before, but it will be completely different to what the others are used to, with big surf, and all the problems with entering and exiting the water, especially around the reef break.
This is the first time most of them will have experienced point breaks, and it’s likely to be big surf – a high percentage of it is larger waves, and it can go up to about 15 foot. Obviously if the waves are that big they won’t surf, but it will be much bigger than what they’re used to.’
