Jobs go at cable laying company

Saturday 22nd November 2008, 9:58AM GMT.

EIGHTEEN workers at a cable-laying contractor are to lose their jobs, as Jersey Electricity no longer has any work for their employer, Vanni (CI) Ltd.

In a statement issued yesterday, Vanni said that the JEC had last week ‘unexpectedly’ announced that it had no further work for its sub-contractor. However, the JEC said that it had been advising the contractor for weeks that there may be no more work for it to do.

JEC commercial director Richard Plaister said that he could not agree with Vanni’s contention that the news was ‘unannounced and unexpected’. ‘We had been advising them for weeks that we may not have any further work.
‘We had hoped to find some but could not,’ he said.

As a result of having no JEC work Vanni said that it now ‘had no choice’ other than to give notice of redundancy to ‘all of its remaining 15 staff’. However, a company spokesman said that three other jobs were to go, bringing the total to 18.
