Thomas has designs on good values

A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy has won a competition to design a new badge for St John’s School.
Thomas Gowlett designed the emblem after the school asked its pupils to discuss the values thinking, learning and caring, and come up with a design which illustrated them simply and would sum up the ethos of the school.
Thomas’s design, which features three figures with the St John parish cross at the heart of each, was chosen from dozens of entries and was given a computer makeover by Glen Smith at Image Ltd so that it could be used throughout the school.
St John’s School headmaster Andrew Willis said that an emblem was very important in symbolising values and that Thomas’s design had captured exactly what St John’s School was all about.
‘A badge or emblem needs to communicate as much as possible about the community it represents, and all in a quick glance,’ he said. ‘Thomas’s design is exceptional for a child of six.
‘The three figures capture perfectly the co-operation, active learning and child-centred approach that we value so highly, and we think it tells all who see it what St John’s School is all about.’
