THE son of golf legend Ian Woosnam has been jailed for two years for attacking a teenager in a ‘cold-blooded’ punishment beating.

Daniel Woosnam (21) and 23-year-old friend Oliver Hall repeatedly punched and kicked their victim following a long-standing dispute over an unpaid debt.

The 18-year-old suffered severe bruising and a double fracture to his jaw and will have three titanium plates in his face for the rest of his life. Hall, of Les Vieux Beaumont, St Peter, was jailed for a total of three years – two years for his part in the attack and an extra year for breaching previous court orders.

The Inferior Number of the Royal Court heard that the duo attacked their victim on 12 June after he failed to repay a debt of between £800 and £900.

Defence Advocate Steve Baker said that being remanded in custody had had a ‘chilling and sobering’ effect on Woosnam, who had never been in prison before. He said that his client was upset at the time of the attack as he had just learnt that his grandmother was terminally ill.

Speaking to the JEP outside court, Ian Woosnam said: ‘My son is very remorseful. What happened was very unfortunate. He had been working very hard to turn his life around, but what happened with his grandmother really upset him. We were hoping for a lesser sentence, but the law is the law. At the end of the day it was a stupid thing to do and he will pay the price. It has taken him a while to grow up and he has learned a hard lesson today.’
