Acknowledging that banks in Jersey already give large sums of money to charity, the chief executive of Volunteering England, Justin Davis Smith, believes that more could and should be done.

He has also claimed that volunteering while in a credit crunch not only makes a huge difference to those in need, but also helps people who are struggling financially and worrying about their jobs to put their problems into perspective.

Mr Davis Smith (pictured) was speaking before a seminar on the Changing Face of Volunteering for 100 charities in the Island. ‘The interesting thing about people giving a day a month is that it is great for all concerned,’ he said. ‘Companies are getting something back in terms of better motivated staff and a higher profile in the community and it is great for the individual who is learning new skills as well as volunteering.

Good idea – but why just the finance industry? Why not all companies and States employees?

Interesting article I would personally like to support this cause. Looking for list of charities who need help. Who can I call. Thank you

It will never happen, I have worked in Finance for 19 years and there is no way Banks will do this. Banks are the most hated organisations in this island and in fact the world, no chance.

Nice one Justin. So those in finance, currently worried about job security should demonstrate to their bosses, already looking to cut costs and cull jobs, that they have insufficient work to justify taking a day out each month to mince about in a charity shop.

Is it April 1st already? What a comedian, and what jokers the JEP are. Who pays his wages? Funded by charities I expect – although that’s an unfair assumption as undoubtedly he does a lot of good work for charity.

I cannot believe the JEP made this headline news yesterday, and the editor needs a rocket. Clearly nothing big happening – credit crunch, anyone? Big opposing views on whether there’s a recession and how hard Jersey hit (Sandpiper don’t think so, Bob Le Neveu does think so) … UK Government cuts VAT? Borrows more than ever before? Proposes review of offshore jurisdictions’ finance industries …

Dear JEP, was the editor on leave yesterday?

I think the senators should spend one day a month doing something for the community. Its a start anyway.
