Landsbanki: Help from Guernsey?
Wednesday 26th November 2008, 2:54PM GMT.
HINTS that Guernsey taxpayers’ money may be used to bale out investors in Landsbanki, the Icelandic bank in administration, were given at a meeting on Monday.
The indication came from Guernsey Chief Minister Lyndon Trott at a meeting with groups of depositors in Landsbanki Guernsey, which was attended by a woman representing Jersey-based investors.
Eleanor Monaghan of the Jersey Landsbanki Action Group was among those who heard Deputy Trott respond to questions about what the Guernsey States might be prepared to do to make up any shortfall if the Icelandic government did not deliver.
The Landsbanki Guernsey Depositors’ Action Group’s chairman, Neil Dickens, said: ‘I asked Deputy Trott whether the States would perhaps help make up the difference if the Icelanders do not come through on their parental guarantee and he responded, “Never say never”,’ said Mr Dickens.
