Ralph Vibert: A master of logic who helped and inspired me

Wednesday 26th November 2008, 2:58PM GMT.

From ex-Senator Pierre Horsfall.
HAVING been away, I have learned only now of the death of ex-Senator Ralph Vibert, OBE.

Less than a month ago I wrote expressing my great sadness at the death of ex-Senator John Le Marquand, a supreme States Member, and it is with equal sadness that I write again regarding ex-Senator Ralph Vibert.

He too sat on the other side of the States when I was first elected in 1975, and he too was helpful and kindness itself. It was my privilege to work with him on a number of committees, including the time when he was president of the Finance and Economics Committee.

He had an amazing intellect and was extremely effective in debate and on committee, but I particularly remember his mastery of logic. All his arguments were based on logic. He was a master of demolishing other speakers’ arguments if they were not logical, as I was to discover the hard way.

I am aware that you have already printed many fitting tributes to ex-Senator Ralph, but I would like to add my own, which is based on my great admiration of him and respect for him. I count myself as fortunate to have been a States Member for some time during his long and distinguished career in the States.

He too was a giant among giants of the day, and he too helped and inspired me as a young Member of the States.
Those senior Members were very special people, and, as I said about ex-Senator John Le Marquand, I do not believe that we shall see their like again.
